On December 19th, 2017, while still working as a doctor and halfway on my journey towards being a coach.
You see, sometimes we think incredible people or people of influence are the ones who get famous, appear in our newsfeeds, or do shows on TV or the radio. Still, in reality, other people are just as incredible as those people, if not more.
These people are unknown but are making changes on the Earth by smiling, being hospitable, being positive, being kind, and making people happy.
These are the real MR and MRS incredible.
So today, I met a lady in her 90s, and I love talking to older people. It's one of my things.
She didn't have one leg because it was amputated years ago and was in the hospital.
She forgot she was in the hospital but welcomed me most dearly and asked me to make myself comfortable.
She said, 'You're looking nice and bright, and that helps you know because on these winter days, we have to find things that cheer us up, and the sun is out today, and that helps as well.'
Then she got talking. She said when she was 22, she had an abscess, and the surgeon who operated on her accidentally cut the artery to her leg, so all her leg died and had to be chopped off.
She said people said you should sue him, but my father said, 'Well, he didn't do it on purpose, did he?'
And then the VERY BEST part of my conversation with her was that she told me:
'You see, I don't dwell on things that can't be changed, and it's never done me any harm.'
And she said:
'I get on with life and make the most of what I have, I still had a job, and I loved it, and I never let my leg stop me. I make people feel welcome when they come to my home, I smile, I'm kind, I stay happy, and I've been blessed with good health, and that's what matters.'
CAN YOU EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE THAT? You go from a healthy 22-year-old to someone with one leg because of another person's mistake.
What would you do?
As I was leaving, she asked me if I wanted a hot drink, and she told me that I was most welcome if I ever wanted to come again.
I left her feeling so much happier and joyful, and I wondered if my positivity made her cheerful or her cheerfulness made me happy. Still, I knew that ALLAH (God) had sent her to give me these messages today, and I wanted to share the wisdom with you.
Another patient said, 'You're looking very bright and cheerful today? Are you going to a party?'
I said: 'No, I'm just cheering my patients up.'
He replied, 'Well, it's working, so keep it up.
The lesson of the story: The little things we do go a long way, a positive attitude goes a long way, and just being smily or cheerful can work miracles - in essence, being 'YOU' can change someone's day.
So don't STOP DOING YOU. Don't stop bringing your happy, cheerful self out in the world, and keep looking for the little (BIG) gifts that ALLAH sends you each day.
In summary, I'll quote my INSPIRING LADY again:
'Don't dwell on things you can't change and make the most of what you have.'
How are you being incredible today?
Because leadership and creating change isn't about doing extraordinary things, it's about making the ordinary unique, and you can start doing that today.
